Do YOU need hazardous materials training?

You need hazardous materials training, if you:

  • Instruct others to ship hazardous materials?
  • Supervise the transportation of hazardous materials?
  • Fill containers with hazardous materials?
  • Package hazardous materials?
  • Label or mark hazardous materials packages?
  • Complete or sign shipping papers including bill of lading or air and ocean declarations?
  • Determine hazardous materials classification for transportation?
  • Purchase packaging for the hazardous materials to be shipped in?
  • Load hazardous materials? Or unload them?
  • Operate a vehicles carrying hazardous materials?
  • Test, repair, certify or modify hazardous materials packaging?
     

If you answered "yes" to any of the above then you need hazardous materials training?  Every person who works directly with hazardous materials should be trained!

Please note: Training requirements applies to all regulated hazardous materials including Limited Quantities, Consumer Commodities, ORM-D, Excepted Quantities, and materials shipped under an exemption.   Government and nonprofit organizations are not always exempt.  The above list is not all inclusive, if you have questions about whether you need hazardous materials training, please contact Safety Specialists at 704-573-0955.

I Need Training, Now What Do I Now?

Where are Training Requirements found?

DOT Regulations

Training requirements can be found in 49 CFR 172.700-704.  Training is required every three years or whenever job functions or regulations change.

ICAO/ IATA Regulations

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requires training
"Before a consignment of dangerous goods is offered for air transport, all relevant persons involved in its preparation must have received training ...as detailed in Part 6".  ICAO Technical Instructions Part 4 Chapter 1.  

International Air Transport Association (IATA) also requires training.  Refer to Table 1.5.A of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations for the type of training that specific job functions require.

International Maritime Dangerous Goods Regulations

The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code requires training. Table  1.3.1.4 and 1.3.1.5 found in the 31st Amendment of the IMDG offer guidelines for job function and training required.
